Walking Ability
Our trained, experienced and friendly staff are always available to discuss the routes and advice on there suitability according to your own experiences. Our aim is for you to have an enjoyable walk and for it to be a special part of your holiday experience on the island of Rhodes, Greece.
On all our walks you will find the following procedure in place.
An experienced Walking Guide with knowledge of the area, friendly and approachable. He or she is supported by Walking Group Leaders.
Groups numbers are determined by the grade of the route, the harder the route smaller the group.
We walk at a pace that will reflect your ability.
For example at any time during the walk if a person becomes detached from the group due to taking lot of pictures or having a five minutes rest period, the Walking Group Leader will be at hand to support and also communicate with the Walking Guide
Our duty of care for our walking cliental is paramount.
How to choose the right route for you.
We all have different walking abilities, regardless if you are an experienced walker or a relative novice. When you are choosing the route consider your personnel interests. Walking within an area of your own personal interest and anticipating what will be around the next corner or over the hill will drive you on, and the actual effort of walking is forgotten and the excitement of discovery and interest takes over.
New to Walking
If you are new to walking and want to develop your skills and venture more into the hills and mountains, here are a few tips.
There is a very good book.
Hill Walking (The Official Handbook of the Mountain Leader and Walking Group Leader Schemes by Steve Long and John Cousins) , this book is easy to read and understand, it starts from the basics and build up to the comprehensive requirements of a Mountain Leader.
Another good book
Map and Compass, The Art of Navigation (Ciceron Techniques) by Peter Hawkins. Both these books are informative and good for referencing back to.
There are many other books on the market that cover these subjects, the books mentioned are my personal preferences.
Walking Clubs
Joining a walking club is always a good idea, where you can make friends and learn about new routes. Many clubs have scheduled walks with a time and place of meeting that are displayed on there websites, most will allow you to turn up on the day and join them, allowing you freedom of choice in a busy lifestyle.
Walking Books
Walking books are available in every country, some are very good and others make you wonder if the author has been on the walk at all, be careful of some walking books as they become dated and no new editions are made, for example you might read “follow the fence on your left”, the fence might have been removed or has perished away and you are left with a gap in the author instructions.
My personal advice would be to learn to map read before using walking books, this is not as hard as it seems, the best way to start map reading is using the map on routes you already know and see if you can identify contours of the land to the map. On a 1:25000 you will find a significant amount of paths on the map already. Always get some training on map reading before venturing out on new routes on the mountains, such places as Plas y Brenin www.pyb.co.uk are ideal for beginners and do courses to help you get started.
