Stephen Williams

Stephen Williams has always been involved in walking, at 18 he took two years out to follow his passion of mountaineering in France, he returned to Wales to settle down with Susan, walking has always been big a part of both their lives.  Over the years Stephen has gained much experience in walking all kind of terrains and has been to Plas y Brenin and has done both Walking Group Leader and Mountain Leader (summer) courses. When in Wales he is taking people out walking on the mountains, he enjoys finding out legends associated with areas he is walking through and re-telling them to his walking companions.
Stephen has a property in Rhodes; he first went to Rhodes in 1996 and over the years has come to knows the people and the island very well.

How did you get involved with Walking Rhodes?:
Susan and myself are the founders of Walking Rhodes, we have been walking in Rhodes since 1996, in the first years we walked mainly alone on mostly uncharted paths, and as the years went on we were joined by friends in which they encouraged us to start Walking Rhodes, it's a big thank you to Richard Brown not only a very dear friend but he also manages Walking Rhodes and without him our small little company could not exist.
What are you involved in?:
I am still working full time at home, leaving the day to day running of the company to Richard, I do get involved in the management side on occasion, but Richard is so effective I am rarely called upon. I plan my annual holidays around our walking season I am a walking leader and enjoy taking people around Rhodes and sharing my discoveries over the years. I do tend to go on a bit when I am walking telling everyone about everything I know in the area we are walking in.
Name three things you always take with you walking in Rhodes?:
Plenty of water, spare cups in case anybody forgets, and a small folding saw to trim the brush and keep our paths clear.
What the most important thing you have learnt about walking in Rhodes?:
Not to take the sun for granted, when walking in the mountains the cool breeze disguises how much sun you get, and by the end of the walk you could suffer from sun burn, I always wear light long sleeved shirts and light long trousers both made from materials adapted for walking in the sun.
Is there anything you miss most when working in Rhodes?:
We have grandchildren now, I miss them when I am here, a few years and they will be coming to Rhodes with us, the Greek people love children, I know they will be spoilt when over here.
Whats you favourite Greek meal?:
Greek Salad with tzatsiki, for starters anyway, I like a lot of different types of Greek food.
What is your favourite snack?:
Propably crisps, I like savoury stuff.
What other interests do you have aside from walking?:
The Grandchildren of course, as a grandfather it is my job to spoil them rotten and then hand them back.... I enjoy being with friends, family and meeting people. Just walking with family, friends and discovering new places and making new walking routes really does it for me.
